Family Newsletter - 2009

Yes I see that we jumped a few years. That's because I never wrote a newsletter for 2006, 2007, or 2008. Sorry

Welcome to the long-awaited return of the Murcray Christmas Letter!
Oh what a year it has been!
It was our slogan (and it turned out to be a slogan of my brother and his family as well) that “We Hate 2008, but things will be Fine in 2009.”
Oh, how we were mistaken. 2009 turned into a year of Highs and Lows.
So that is the title this year.
MURCRAY CHRISTMAS LETTER for 2009
A Year of High’s & Lows
High - To begin all was well. Only Satan was stirring as God welcomed another child into his fold. Our friend, Yukai had announced to us around Christmas of 2008 that after many years of study and discussions (quite a few with Keri and I) he had decided that it was perfectly logical to become a Christian as any other choice would be foolish and unnatural. So we celebrated and he had his first pajama Christmas at Kelly & David Marley’s home with us and was just so happy to be able to celebrate his Saviors birthday.
Later Yukai was baptized and we were so proud to have been invited and to see our friend join our family.
Low - Unfortunately, Yukai lost his work visa (Yukai is Chinese) and was forced to move home to China. However, he goes back with a better understanding of how to witness to others out there so they might experience the same joy he has. God Bless, my friend.
High - For the first time ever, Keri and I became the proud owners of our very own house!!! A two-story, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom, double car garage home! We are grateful for our wonderful Christian realtor, Robert May, who not only got us a GREAT deal on our first home, but also became a dear friend. The day we got the keys, we went to PetSmart and got ourselves some playmates for Cyrano de Bergerac (our all black cat that thinks he owns us). We took home not one, but TWO beautiful all white, blue-eyed female kittens - Talia, who looks like a little white tiger, and Marilyn Monroe, who is deaf but fearless.
Low - We live in an Association that forgot about us and after three months decided to get mad that we haven’t sent a payment in for Association dues. We calmly let them know that since they have never sent us our payment vouchers or notifications that we had no way of knowing the amount or where to send it. Needless to say should we EVER find ourselves in the market for another house we will avoid one in an association at ALL costs!
High - On August 28th, Keri turned a whopping 30 years old! We celebrated by opening our new house up for everyone to come see and bring oodles of gifts. The theme was Mamma Mia! It’s my Big Fat Greek 30th Birthday/Housewarming and the grand flourish of the day full of yummy Greek food was the beheading of the lamb shaped cake (done by Mandy Faulkner) made out of red velvet!
Low - I am still the oldest one in the group whenever we hang out with our friends. I’ve even been mistaken for Kelly Marley’s dad. Grumble grumble grumble.
High - Byron Myers, Keri’s Dad, had to go in for surgery for Diverticulitis. It was an intense surgery that required several weeks of recovery, but he made it out with a new scar to wow the girls and a much thinner waist line. The stud is still getting compliments!
Low - James Murcray, my Dad, went in for emergency surgery because his insides sprung a leak and was leaking stool into is abdominal cavity. Unfortunately, after 4 weeks in the ICU Dad developed pneumonia on top of everything else and on November 16th he died.
High - With all of this and with all the heartache and pain that we and our families have gone through this past year only one thing causes us to end this letter and this year on a high. And that is that no matter what we may think, God, our beloved Jesus the Christ, is master of all and in total control at all times! We have been so blessed with the love and support of our family and friends throughout all of these highs and lows that we can do nothing BUT thank God for his mercy and Grace that He showers on us all through the year. That is how we will end this letter. With praise on our lips and thanksgiving and love in our hearts.
May God richly bless you as you go into this new year and may you always know we, Keri and I, (and even the cats) will always be…

Your Friends,
Joshua & Keri Murcray

Family Newsletter - 2004

2004

Well, another year another letter,
But this one should be better.
I’ll be quick and not so boring,
Besides, I’m tired of your snoring.

So here we go,
Let’s start the show.

For those of you who don’t know,
The beginning of 2004 was slow.
I got hurt at work and onto Worker’s Comp,
This means no play, no work, no run, and no romp.

Thus passed January.

The next month life got better,
I was healed and the weather got wetter.
I got a job at Cal. Baptist. U.,
They said, “We need you, we do!”
I said, “Why, I can start today!”
So a Public Safety Officer I became, and CBU said, “Hooray!”

And February was rained out.

A tragic day, O woe is me!
Another birthday you see!
One year older, 29 bold,
But next year I’ll be OLD!
Not much else to tell,
Oh well.

So much for March.

Hi ho, hi ho off to Montana we go!
A vacation that covered our car in snow.
Then off to Colorado to visit Aunty Diana,
Lots of shopping and then we left, but we didn’t wanna.
I bought comic books and got an old Monopoly,
Keri got crafty things and Gone with the Wind collectibles made her quite jolly.

That took up most of April.

A sad month that started off great,
Birthdays cakes aplenty and everyone ate,
But Friends ended never to return,
And Smallville gave Martha Kent quite a burn.
If you don’t follow Smallville you are missing out,
Summer reruns make me pout.

So May ended with a, “What?! They can’t end it that way!”

John, Melissa, and Matthew came to stay,
Matthews' first trip to the beach was an exciting day.
With plenty of swimming and food,
We talked late into the night and Matthew slept good.
Seeing Keri’s godson and his parents went well,
I hope we can visit them soon but only time will tell.

Oh, how June made us miss our friends and the winter.

A No-Good-Reason-Shower and girls only were invited,
The girls played games, got facials at Kelly’s where they over-nighted.
The men stayed away, played games and started to brag,
About important things like movies, how much we can eat, and what roller coasters make us gag.

Keri’s godson and his family left for Texas in July.

Cousin Kevin performed,
Uncle Warren’s golf swing had great form,
We got a new fridge and dining room table,
Asked friends over for dinner and all said they were able.
Keri had a birthday and turned 25!
Gobs of games, fabulous friends, plenty of presents, fountains of food, it’s great to be alive!

August ended in a party!

The heat was too much at the San Diego Zoo.
Gilmore Girls & Joey premiered and Smallville did too.
Two nephews & a niece were added to the family,
And a picnic lunch on the Front Lawn at CBU for Keri shows how Josh can be gentlemanly.

September snoozed on.

Birthdays for family made us want to celebrate,
So we got Annual Passes at Disneyland and found a hotel that we now hate.
While it rained the Hot Tub was soothing,
At Color Me Mine, Tigger and Elvira painted for free while schmoozing.

Time passed quickly and so did October.

It still is November as I type these letters,
It rained and even snowed making the land a bit wetter.
Thanksgiving will be at David & Kelly Marley’s this year,
After which we decorate for Christmas and start the cheer.

November marches on.

With Christmas around the corner and vacation days forthcoming,
Cooking warms the house for friends and family arriving.
Shopping last minute cause some loss of reason,
But we as Christians know that Jesus is the Reason for the Season!

Merry Christmas from Joshua & Keri Murcray!

Family Newsletter - 2003

I know this was a few years ago, but I thought this would be a good chance for you to get to know me a bit better. If you care, that is.
So the following Family Newsletters you will read are actual letters that my wife and I sent out to family and friends.
Here we go:
The (1st) Twelve Months of Marriage
Not in Poem Form J

The time has come, the Walrus said, to speak of many things…and so it has, at least in this household. One thing my family didn’t do a whole lot of, but my wife’s family does, is write an end of the year letter/synopsis. An essay, if you will, of all the goings-on in the family. Keri, my wife, has graciously allowed me to do the writing this year. Of course it will have to meet her approval, but I love to talk and write and so I am very thankful she said yes to my request. However, I have but one standard that I am forced to obey, and that is: Keep it to one page! Sigh.
AND SO IT BEGINS…
Let me take you back to the twelfth month in the year of our Lord two-thousand and two. On the twenty-first day Keri Marie Myers and Joshua William Murcray were wed by Reverends James Leroy Murcray and Byron Keith Myers. The former being the father of the groom and the latter being the father of the bride. Unfortunately, due to a seating limitation, the list of over four hundred invites had to be drastically reduced to a meager 200. Our deepest regrets to those missing two hundred. Of those invited 175 made an appearance and stayed for the blessed event. Following the wedding was a sumptuous meal and reception that consisted of singing, dancing, and plenty of photographs. The evening came to a close some hours after the end of the ceremony and with a taste of the most delicious cake in the world, the newlyweds were sent off to begin their new lives. We spent our honeymoon at Disneyland, Christmas Eve at my parents’ house, and Christmas Day with Keri’s family in Blythe, California. Our honeymoon ended with two days of camping in the living room and loads of TV.
The New Year started with me working the graveyard shift (which I continue to do, ugh!). On the 3rd we were off to the baby shower for John & Melissa Cordrey who named Keri the godmother of their as-yet-unborn son Matthew. My dad, the aforementioned Rev. James Murcray (“Josh’s dad” for the rest of this letter) had surgery on the 13th. On the 26th my brother and his wife celebrated their first anniversary and were closely followed by my parents, Jim & Patricia Murcray, who celebrated their 31st anniversary on the 27th. Apparently, though, the end of the month left a lot to be desired. The apartment next door to us caught on fire on the 31st, when a little boy was playing with his mothers’ cigarette lighter. The smoke damage in our apt. was minimal and there was no fire damage, but I was home alone, running in and out gathering as much as I could before the fire dept. kicked me out. Needless to say we had to move to a new apt. That brings us to the next paragraph and the next month.
It took us all of two days and help from David Marley (Kelly’s husband), Kelly Marley (Keri’s sister), Byron Myers (Keri’s father, remember? He did part of the wedding? Try to stay with us.), my mom (Patricia Murcray), and Maribeth Myers (Keri’s mom) to get us all moved in by Monday. Some days later we celebrated Valentine’s Day. It turns out to have been Keri’s very first Valentine’s Day with a date. So I tried hard. David and I cooked a five-course meal for Keri and Kelly. We even printed up special menus for the dinner. The ladies got dressed up and we men did all the cooking and cleaning. With their favorite flowers waiting for them and, of course, with us men doting on them hand and foot, the ladies were thrilled. I think what really topped it was the fact that the ladies got dressed up, but were able to wear their slippers to the dinner table. How much better could we have treated them?!!!! (Let’s pause while I buff my nails) One further note for February looks in on the 25th where Keri and I like to celebrate the actual day we first met. No, not in person, but actually when we met on the internet. Yes, you heard me correctly, we met on www.match.com dating service. Pretty cool, huh?
I can’t talk about March without pointing out the most important day of that month. March 1st is my birthday. I turned 28 this year and have already started planning my 30th birthday. Any ways, my wife invited our two families to Castle Park (an amusement/miniature golf park) for the day. We rode rides until 5pm and then we played miniature golf followed by a delicious dinner at Claim Jumpers. Outside of my birthday, and Keri and I hanging out a lot with friends over the month, nothing much exciting happened. So, on to April.
The biggest event in April was the birth of Keri’s godson, Matthew Christopher Cordrey on the 4th. The next day Keri and I celebrated by going and seeing Billy Hill & The Hillbillies at Disneyland three times in a row. Sounds weird, but go and see them and you’ll understand. Keri and I had Easter lunch with my family while Byron and Maribeth were on vacation.
As most people know Mother’s Day is in May. The sad part of Mother’s Day was that Keri and I and her family had to attend a funeral for Linda Stevens (grandmother of Keri’s godson Matthew) the day before. In fact we also celebrated Mother’s Day with my folks that same evening. Since Keri and I were going to be gone in June we decided to celebrate Father’s Day with my dad early. So on the 31st Keri and I went model home viewing with my parents. After that we took them out to eat at The Rib-Cage. Brief Note: The Rib-Cage in Moreno Valley is probably the greatest barbecue restaurant I have ever eaten at. I highly recommend it.
June snuck up on us despite our intense yearning for it to arrive. June 2nd was the anniversary of my good friends Justice and Kristina Ford, Aunty Diana’s (Keri’s Aunt) had a birthday on the 14th, Father’s Day on the 15th, Kelly & David’s 3rd Anniversary on the 17th, Maribeth & Byron’s 30th Anniversary on the 20th, and Keri and I celebrated our 6th Month Anniversary on the 21st. Melissa & John Cordrey had their 2nd Anniversary on the 23rd. Megan Olsen had a Birthday on the 28th. So did Justice & Kristina’s first daughter Kaylie who celebrated her 1st Birthday. But what topped the whole month off was when Maribeth, Byron, Kelly, David, Keri, and I all went off to paradise in Hawaii for ten days. If you want a more detailed report give me a holler and I’ll send it on to you. I’ve already written it up. On to July.
July 4th saw us at Kelly & David’s house for a celebration. On July 20th there was a BBQ at my parents house to celebrate my mom’s birthday. On the 27th Byron played a concert at the Nixon Library. (I’m keeping things short because I’m running out of room.)
Fall came (just kidding, down here summer never seems to let go) and August arrived. On the 7th Byron Myers celebrated his birthday with family at Red Lobster. Myers, Marley and Murcray joined together to watch the play Hello Dolly. And then something sad happened to me. Keri left me for about 4 days to go visit John, Melissa, and Matthew Cordrey in St. Louis. But she did come back and so then I was happy. On the 23rd something profound happened to us. We saw Pirates of the Caribbean. Byron played in the orchestra for Evita. On the 28th Keri celebrated her 24th birthday. And thus ended August.
September 1st had three important reasons to celebrate. The most important being my half-birthday. The second because it was Labor Day. The third because Keri, Byron and I went and bought a 2002 Chevy Cavalier. YAY!!! On the 10th Daniel Marley (David’s brother) celebrated his birthday. Two other important dates were the 18th , when Survivor premiered, and the 23rd when Gilmore Girls premiered.
The most important day of October was the 1st when Smallville premiered. Just kidding. You hope. On the 7th my brother celebrated his birthday and Maribeth Myers followed suit with a birthday on the 13th. Melissa Cordrey didn’t want to be left out so she celebrated her birthday on the 16th. We celebrated that by getting new bedding and giving our queen size bed to my parents in exchange for their California King size bed on the 19th. On the 20th I injured my back at work and had to go to the hospital. They didn’t like what they saw and then took a look at my back. They put me on Workman’s Comp where I stayed for about 3 weeks. A tradition among Kelly and Keri is to watch the movie High Spirits on Halloween, so we did. And October came to a scary end.
In November my parents left on the 5th to head out to Oklahoma to visit my sister Kristin. They left me in charge of their house, their cats, and their hot tub…bwahahahahaha! Ahem. They then went on to Branson, Missouri to celebrate Thanksgiving with Kristin, Jim & Becky Mitchell and their son, My nephew Kyle Mitchell celebrated his birthday on the 25th. He’s getting sooooo old! On the 19th Keri and I went to Disneyland to tape the Billy Hill & The Hillbillies show. On the 26th Keri and I went over to my grandmother’s to celebrate a small Thanksgiving and played a rousing game of Boggle. The next day we were off to Kelly & David’s house for a giant 21 person salute to Thanksgiving. The next day us manly men were off to conquer the golf course. This was followed by a pancake bonanza at Byron and Maribeth’s house. Yummy yum! November ended with Keri and I decorating our apartment for Christmas. Wish you could see it.
Now we are up to date and December is back. I’m back to work, all of our gifts are bought and plans for the month are pretty well set. I can’t believe it’s already been a whole year since we got hitched, shackled, ball & chained, not to mention married. WOW!! I’m feeling a little dizzy. For our anniversary we are headed to Las Vegas. I’ve never been there before so Keri will show me the sights. First stop is the Star Trek Experience, of course.
Keri wants me to tell you thank you for being such an important part of our lives and we are so blessed to count you all as family and friends. We love you and wish you the merriest Christmas of all –may it be full of God’s Blessings.

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year,
Joshua & Keri Murcray

What do you think the purpose of life is?

One of the toughest questions of today. Everyone has a different answer. Except maybe Christians. It is believed and supported by the Bible that our whole purpose in life is to worship God. And while that is partially true, there are other "commands" that we are to follow.
In fact, the very first job ever given to man was in Genesis 2:15. Man was placed in the Garden of Eden to work it and to take care of it. The very next thing that man does is to name all the animals.
Now, throughout all of this man is walking and talking with God.
What can I take from this?
That we are meant to walk in the footsteps of God, to talk with Him everyday, and that we are to take care of all that He has given us.
To me, that is our purpose in Life.
Many will answer this question with: To glorify God. But then the question has come up: Why does God need glorifyng?
Actually, the glroification of God is not necessarily FOR God as it is to show others the glory of God. If, we as His children, speak, act, and portray God in all His Glory, it will help others come to know Him on a deeper level. That is what is meant by glorifying God.
And while that is a purpose of Life, just saying that can sometimes confuse or mislead others. It is HOW we glorify God that can lead others to Him.
Many think that glorifying God is all about praying and/or fasting and reading your Bible and going to church, but it's not just that. It is being an example of how God wants us to act and how He wants us to live, that when we live life in ......a Christ-like manner that we truly glorifying to God. For example,if you have children, you raise them with certain ideals and in a certain mind set hoping that they will one day be good people. Should they rebel or turn from your teachings and actually do things that cause you pain, many people will think they were raised that way. This makes you look bad, though you did not teach them those things. So with God. We are given a instruction manual on how to live our lives in such a way as to be a good example of the teachings of God. To turn from those is to basically slap God in the face. To follow those teachings is to "gloify" to give credit to the one who taught us those things. To glorify God.
Now the question comes up, what does it mean to speak, act, and portray God? And what does it mean to have a deeper level of relationship with God?
When we, and I mean those who try to follow the Word of God, do our best to follow the commandments of God, we are using His instructions for our daily life. This is no different than using the instructions our parents gave us as we were gr...owing up. When you do something that follows the life lessons you learn from your parents, many times someone will tell you that your mother or father would be proud of you, or that they raised you right. This is what it means to speak, act, and portray the teachings given to you. If you are doing this while following Gods laws than you are acting, speaking, and portraying a positive light on Gods teachings.
As for a deeper level, it's sad to say but a lot of people believe in God, and that's it. There is no committment outside of that belief. There is no effort to actually follow His teachings, or His commandments, of even to letting Him have any other part of your life. When you love someone like your father you naturally want them to be a part of your life. You want them to be proud of you. We want the person who taught us about life and how to live it be proud of our accomplishments and to be a part of our lives. So when we follow God's teachings and his instructions on how to life l...ife, we should want God to be a part of our lives as well. So in a sense we want a deeper level of a relationship with Him outside of just believing in Him. To only believe in Him and not want to follow His instructions is like believing you have a dad, but not wanting to listen to Him or even live with him. It's sad. True there are families out there that are like that. But that doesn't make it any less saddening.

Sad Hypocrisy

I work in a restaurant and I love it. I get to meet new people every day and I get the chance to help them in way or another. I enjoy the interaction with my fellow co-workers as well. I haven't been there long, but I'm already making some friends.
I try very hard to be a good example of a Christian man and to help everyone whenever possible. But my "job" at being an example for Christ became much harder on (Ironically) a Sunday.
A large party of people, all dressed up, talking about church and the sermon, came in and were all seated together, laughing and having a good time. The servers (one male, one female) who waited on them (not me) ihntroduced themselves and immediately began to do their best to serve them and make sure everything was just right.
Now, I know these servers and I know they were doing a great job. So it surprised me when the male server came into the kitchen swearing profusely and then slammed his fist into the wall. He was SO upset that he could barely get the words out.
As he finally got around to explaining his anger it turns out that this party of church-goers was quite possibly the rudest bunch of people he had ever waited on in his 5+ years of serving!
At first I was shocked and then I became very sad.
He then turned to all the other servers in the kitchen and told them that if they are going to be going to church and talking about God, then they need to make sure to not be so F-in rude! Then he stormed back out onto the dining room floor.
Why did this happen? Why are Christians showing such a bad example? Is it because they think that those people who didn't go to church are beneath them? Do they think that they are somewhat better than others because they are Christians?
I am a Christian and I am proud of that fact. I may not be a great example of one, but I try. But to have someone who may or may not be a Christian see this kind of example, is horrible!
Take from this what you will, but for those of you who are not Christians, please know that this terrible example of a group of Christians is not indicative of the entire Christian community.
For those of you who are Christians, well, please remember that even when you are feeling at your worst, you need to make sure that you are still showing a good Christian example...and not an attitude.
